Hamish Thomson is the new general manager for Wrigley UK, The Grocer can reveal.

Thomson, who is currently based in Australia where he leads Wrigley's Pacific region, will be taking up the role next month. He replaces Ian Burton, who was recently promoted to run Wrigley's European business.

The New Zealander has worked for Wrigley since 2005 and under his leadership the Pacific Region, which includes Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, has achieved five years of growth in gum and mints. He also oversaw marketing campaigns in the role, including the creation of Food Creatures, which are used in advertising for Wrigley's Extra in the UK.

Thomson started his career in advertising in the UK, before moving to Reebok where he worked for eight years. He held a number of sales and marketing roles there and helped establish Reebok Europe in the Netherlands. He then moved to Australia to become marketing director for Mars Petcare, before joining Wrigley in 2005.

"It's great to be coming back to the UK, particularly at such an exciting time for Wrigley," he said. "The gum business is growing and we've got some brilliant plans for our confections in 2012. We'll be celebrating our UK centenary just after I start, so it's going to be an honour to be part of the celebrations with the superb team of associates I know we have in the UK. I only hope my new colleagues will also allow me to celebrate what I hope will be an All Blacks victory in the Rugby World Cup!"
