Sir; Ageism is still a very real issue in the food and drink industry and a cause of misery for many people.
Older people who have been forced to re-enter employment after a break are finding it very difficult to be treated seriously by potential employers.
It is very hard to understand if you are not in that position, but I do speak from personal experience. I am 57, soon to be 58, and I have been out of work for more than two years. I am frustrated and very upset at my situation, which has not come about through want of trying. Most of the jobs I apply for come from The Grocer, which is good, but I am still waiting for somebody to offer me a position as a merchandiser.
It does seem that I am being discriminated against because of my age and I am sure that others must be in a similar position. Some employers seem content to lose out by discounting all the strengths that an older person, with a wealth of experience, can bring to a role. When will this attitude disappear?
