The big four supermarkets are supporting a competition set up by Baywatch, which campaigns for good car parking facilities for disabled customers.
Shoppers who are disabled will be asked to nominate the stores that they believe have the best, and worst, parking facilities. Voting is due to begin in February.
Asda, Safeway, Sainsbury and Tesco together will distribute at least 500,000 nomination forms. Awards will be made in a range of categories, including the best large store, the best small store and the best
employee in relation to parking for the disabled.
The competition is open to any food retail outlet or chain that provides parking for disabled customers and finalists will be invited to an awards ceremony in London in July.
A Baywatch survey this year showed that about 20% of parking bays allocated to disabled customers in the big four supermarket car parks were used by the able-bodied.
