Scottish wholesaler JW Filshill increased pre-tax profit by 6.2% to £1.8m last year - but its boss warned not to expect the same sort of performance next time around.

Accounts posted on Companies House showed that turnover increased by 8.8% to £162m in the year ending January 2008.

However, trading conditions had deteriorated markedly over the past two months, said MD Ronnie Hanah. "It's tough out there for our customers," he said. "Our sales have flattened and I'm sure it's going to be a very difficult Christmas. But we're hoping KeyStores, which are very competitively priced, will leave us in a strong position."

Last week the delivered wholesaler and cash & carry operator said it was moving into wholesaling in England for the first time in a bid to further boost sales.
