JJ Food Service nearly doubled its pre-tax profit from £4.5m to £8.6m for the year ending March 2008, while turnover rose 13% to £117m, according to accounts at Companies House.

The company said it had increased its profitability by keeping its costs down. Investment in new IT had helped it change the way it loaded its lorries and planned delivery routes, resulting in fewer lorries on the road, allowing it to reduce costs for labour, fuel and wear and tear.

"Our investment in IT over the past three years is resulting in efficiencies throughout our whole warehousing and distribution chain but without compromise to either service or quality of goods," said MD Mustafa Kiamil.

JJ Food Service's net profit of 7.4% was among the best performances within the sector, he added. The profits are to be reinvested in new depots through the UK, employing extra staff and ongoing staff training.
