A Yorkshire cheesemaker has warned there could be a Feta shortage after it lost a battle to keep calling its second best-seller Yorkshire Feta.
The EU ordered Shepherds Purse of Thirsk to change the name in 2002 and, until this week’s ruling by the European Court of Justice, it had been challenging the decision.
The ban, due to take effect in 2007, was imposed after Greek cheese makers persuaded the European Commission to award Feta Protected Designation of Origin status.
Shepherds Purse founder Judy Bell said: “I don’t believe Greece will be able to meet the world’s need for Feta on its own.
“As Feta is not a geographical area we should be allowed to use it as a generic term.”
