Food sales may be falling, but shoppers are still hugely loyal to Marks & Spencer’s food offering and rate it as better quality than anyone else’s.
As M&S prepared to put out another set of poor interims on Tuesday, a survey carried out for The Grocer by HI Europe revealed that more than one in three of all shoppers responsible for the main grocery shop in their household still shopped at M&S. They are mainly purchasing top-up shopping, convenience and special occasion items.
Of those, 71% felt M&S offered better quality than its supermarket rivals and 63% said it had a better reputation. They also rated its premium own label and fresh produce best, Tesco coming second in both cases, while 57% thought that its food tasted better than its rivals’ premium ranges.
However, M&S scored poorly for range and value for money - Tesco and Asda respectively taking the top spots - and only 21% thought its stores were convenient to use, underscoring the challenge faced by the retailer if it is to halt the fall in its sales.
