The number of adverts for alcohol on television has risen, with some ads making drink look more attractive to youngsters, the Telegraph has reported. According to Young People and Advertising, a study by Ofcom and the Advertising Standards Authority, one-third of children and young adults thought adverts made alcohol look appealing. The aim of the report was to assess the impact of stricter alcohol advertising rules introduced in 2005.

Farmers across Britain are facing a levy to help pay for the costs of dealing with animal diseases such as bird flu and foot and mouth, according to The Guardian. Curbing the spread of infection in cattle, sheep and turkeys is likely to cost about £120m, of which farmers will be expected to meet £40m through a levy based on the size of each farm and its operations.

Many shoppers would back a ban on free plastic bags, according to The Independent, reporting two online polls conducted by the British Market Research Bureau. The survey of 1,015 people living in London indicated 61% of respondents approved of supermarkets charging for bags for environmental reasons.
