Young’s Bluecrest has snapped up one of the UK’s largest independent seafood processors in a bid to consolidate its position as the UK’s leading seafood supplier.

The acquisition of the Pinegain Group of companies, the holding company for Marr Foods, includes three factories and boosts Young’s position in Pacific salmon, smoked fish and tuna, said chief executive Wynne Griffiths. “Obviously, seafood is a fast growing market and this gives us extra capacity. More importantly, however, it allows us to consolidate our relationships with the major retailers.”

Marr Foods, which has a £50m turnover, supplies a range of added value, chilled and frozen seafood products to the multiples under their own labels and the Marr and Scotpak brands.
