Typhoo will next week kick off its £3m push to get back into the premier league of tea brands with a new TV commercial breaking on Monday (April 15). The brand has endured a torrid time recently, with latest figures from Information Resources showing that sales plummeted by almost 20% in the last year to rest at under £22m. The disappointing slump coincides with an upturn in fortunes for market leaders PG Tips and Tetley whose sales are around five and four times greater than Typhoo's respectively. However, both rivals have recently been panned for replacing iconic ads (the chimps and Tea Folk) with new campaigns which appear to have flopped with viewers. Experts now predict that Typhoo could steal a march on its rivals if its ads impress. Its famous 1980s slogan You only get an oo with Typhoo' has changed slightly for the latest campaign with consumers being told: Get back your OO with Typhoo'. The ads, which aim to be humorous, show deflated people getting a pick up from drinking tea. A director at one London advertising agency told The Grocer: "It's too early to say for sure but I believe both PG Tips and Tetley have made mistakes with their latest campaigns. Typhoo has a real chance to catch up." {{P&P }}
