A change in European law means home chefs could soon be able to make fruit pies or cakes more cheaply.
EU rules previously laid down restrictive standards for the size and shape of certain fruits and vegetables sold at retail.
However, since 1 July, retailers have been allowed to sell below-standard fresh produce as long as it is made clear on the pack that it is intended for home processing.
Asda is poised to capitalise on the new rules, with the launch later this year of a range of fruit and vegetables targeted specifically at home chefs.
Asda said it was too early to give further details about the range. However, the fruit is expected to retail more cheaply than more uniform fresh produce lines.
Other retailers may follow Asda's lead, with Tesco saying it will put the produce into its Market Value range.
