Waitrose has become the first supermarket chain to be granted a Royal Warrant by the Queen.

Warrants recognise people or companies that regularly supply goods or services to certain members of the Royal Family, and allow recipients to display "By appointment" crests on products.

Waitrose, which already holds a warrant from the Queen Mother, started supplying the royal household five years ago from its Windsor branch.

Other food companies to get the Royal seal of approval include British Sugar, Cadbury, Nestle and Fortnum and Mason.

Waitrose MD Steve Esom said: "This is a wonderful Christmas present and a great tribute in particular to all those partners who work in our Windsor branch."
