Waitrose is to become the first UK supermarket to own and operate a cookery school when it opens a new facility above its Finchley Road store in London in October.

The 4,600 sq ft school will be equipped with a theatre, teaching area, dining area, bar and kitchen and will create 16 new jobs.

"We want to inspire the nation to move from just watching cookery programmes to actually cooking and experimenting with new ingredients," said Waitrose executive chef Neil Nugent.

As well as offering consumers a choice of cookery classes, in particular cuisines and skills-based sessions such as butchery and baking, Waitrose, which has recruited Delia Smith and Heston Blumenthal to front its most recent advertising campaign, will also use the facility to train specialist staff working across the company's 229 branches.
