Walkers has become the first company to have its right to use the Carbon Trust's Carbon Reduction Label on crisp packs renewed, after smashing its carbon footprint target.

The PepsiCo company has reduced carbon emissions 7% since 2007, exceeding its original 3% target.

Walkers employed a raft of energy-saving initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, including its decision to switch to 100% British potatoes. It also cut gas and electricity consumption by improving manufacturing facilities and using biodiesel-fuelled delivery trucks. Walkers estimates these measures have saved it £400,000 since 2007.

Walkers' re-engagement of its supply chain to be more efficient was impressive, said Tom Delay, chief executive of the Carbon Trust. "This shows that encouraging companies to make public commitments to reduce emissions via the label provides the focus needed to deliver change."
