1. Crunchy and Giant Prawn Cocktail Wotsits

The most-liked new product of 2022 was revealed by The Grocer in February

New product watchers went wild for the combination of the retro prawn cocktail flavour plus the new Giants format.

2. Heinz pasta sauces

Heinz does nothing by halves. That’s why when it unveiled its pasta sauce range back in February, it didn’t launch just one or two flavours. Oh no, its core range contains four variants: Tomato Sauce for Bolognese, Sundried Cherry Tomato & Basil, Tomato & Chilli, and Tomato, Mascarpone & Grana Padano Cheese.

It also teased three potential extensions to the lineup: Tomato & Lentil Ragu, Chunky Tomato & Mediterranean Veggies and Tomato, Mushroom & Pepper.

If you think that’s a lot of NPD for one year, think again. In this article we explore the super speed of innovation at Heinz and all the brand’s new product launches since 2020.

3. Leon Garlic & Aioli Waffle Fries

The fakeaway trend only grew in 2022. And brands made it easier by launching many of their staple dishes into stores.

Leon was key among them, debuting its waffle fries in Sainsbury’s freezer sections in March.

4. Hellmann’s Gravy, Coronation and Chilli Charger mayonnaises

In more evidence of how much Brits love a fakeaway, these flavoured mayos generated a lot of excitement on The Grocer’s Instagram page when they were unveiled in March.

Hellmann’s billed Gravy Mayonnaise, Coronation Mayonnaise and Chilli Charger Mayonnaise as being inspired by “Britain’s best-loved restaurant sauces”.

5. Kettle Chips Bites

Whether consumers know it or not, one of the key trends driving innovation behind the new products they find in stores is compliance with HFSS regulations.

It’s one of the reasons Kettle Chips launched these non-HFSS bread bites back in March. Focaccia Bites with Sea Salt, Rosemary & Extra Virgin Olive Oil; Naan Bites with Spiced Onion Bhaji with Chilli & Toasted Onion; and Sourdough Bites with Parmigiano Reggiano & Balsamic Vinegar of Modena hit Morrisons first, followed by Tesco.

6. English Cheesecake Company frozen cheesecake bites and tubs

Another company on an NPD spree has been the English Cheesecake Company.

This year it has unveiled new bites formats, as well as taking on the ice cream category by moving into tubs.

7. Prodigy Salted Caramel Chocolate Egg

Combining the selling points of being vegan-friendly and containing long-standing favourite salted caramel, Prodigy is one of the smaller brands to feature on this list.

Its chocolate eggs rolled into Holland & Barrett back in February.

8. Galaxy Milk Chocolate and Galaxy Orange Digestive Biscuits

There was a time when supermarkets could barely move for chocolate orange NPD.

Galaxy’s revival of that trend caused huge excitement when it unveiled its chocolate-covered digestive biscuits earlier in December.

First heading into Asda stores, look out for the duo hitting more supermarkets and convenience retailers in 2023.

9. Little Moons Iced Latte Coffee

From a brand as social media savvy as Little Moons, it’s no surprise its limited edition Iced Latte Coffee flavoured mochi balls struck a chord with online NPD enthusiasts.

Unveiled in the peak of the UK’s summer heatwave, the brand promised the new flavour would provide a coffee caffeine hit while keeping consumers cool and refreshed.

10. Lotus Biscoff Milk Chocolate Biscoff Crumb Bar and White Chocolate Biscoff Cream Bar

Lotus Biscoff can do no wrong. It’s arguably become the flavour of the decade and this is the second item on this list it features in – the first being English Cheesecake Co’s Lotus Biscoff flavoured bites.

Combined with chocolate and new variations on the flavour, such as crumbs and cream, it was inevitable social media watchers would want to share the news with their friends.

11. Starbucks Caffè Latte and Caramel Macchiato

This product backed up its high ranking Instagram launch with an award at The Grocer’s New Product Awards 2022.

Perhaps more proof, if needed, that the UK is transitioning from a nation of tea lovers to coffee aficionados.

12. White Chocolate Cadbury Creme Egg

Easter products always do well on The Grocer’s social media feeds. But this one, revealed in December, piqued the excitement of customers who had been calling for a white chocolate version of Cadbury’s much-loved Creme Egg for years.

That’s not all. Cadbury also added 1kg packs of its Mini Eggs and  Dairy Milk Orange Filled eggs.

13. Weetabix Lyle’s Golden Syrup

Everyone is pleased to see Weetabix topped with anything but baked beans. These, launched in partnership with Lyle’s Golden Syrup, hit the mark, especially because they contain so little salt, fat and sugar that they’re excluded from HFSS restrictions.

These were revealed in April and rolled into retailers in May.

14. Heck

Heck took inspiration from places close to home and across the pond with this set of autumn launches.

From batter sausages to corn dogs, the eclectic mix of new products made up the brand’s biggest range expansion yet.

15. Leon Aioli Potato Salad and Love Burger Slaw

Another win for Leon, proving how much people want to see high street options in their fridges and freezers at home.

This duo launched in the run-up to summer, aiming to capitalise on barbecue season.

16. Cadbury Daim, Fingers and Twirl Orange Easter Eggs

In the vein of Colin, Cuthbert and other caterpillar cakes, Ginny the gluten-free guinea pig is a barrel-shaped cake with a face.

18.  Toblerone Golden

Blonde chocolate became a key trend ahead of Easter 2022. It became a staple of both retailer ranges and branded products.

Toblerone’s launch proves how far that trend has come, when it first launched the bar as a limited edition in August before extending it to the range for longer.

19. Tony’s Chocolonely and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

Tony’s and Ben & Jerry’s teamed up in August for a raft of products playing to both of the brands’ strengths.

20. Innocent Strawberry, Watermelon & Mint and Mango, Passionfruit & Vanilla

February and March became the months with the most popular innovations, helped along by these Innocent juices with a twist.

The brand aimed the new range at dinner time, in a bid to break free of the hold breakfast has on the market.

21. Multigrain Pringles

In another example of healthier alternatives driving innovation, Pringles released these healthier versions of its tubes in September.

The brand said it had experimented with flavours and seasonings to cut down on salt content without compromising on flavour.
