Asda lost its cheapest retailer title to Morrisons this week and had to make do with sharing joint second place with Sainsbury's. It was bad news for Tesco, too, which fell two places to fourth.

Morrisons, which undercut its nearest rivals by £1.02, provided 23 of the 33 cheapest or joint-cheapest items. There was little pricing activity, however, with its basket costing just 0.9% less than last week. What reductions there were included a 2p cut in the price of Magnums, a 50p reduction on pineapple and ongoing offers on the Percol coffee and Ocean Spray cranberry juice. It made just one price hike with its 9p increase in lettuce.

Asda lost its top spot mainly because several offers ended, which pushed the price of Ocean Spray cranberry juice up 20p, kidney beans up 7p and tinned spaghetti 8p. The retailer still provided 22 of the 33 cheapest or joint-cheapest items, however, and with five offers, it boasted the most promotions, including Mr Muscle, which was down 24p, and Percol coffee, down 31p.

Sainsbury's jumped a place this week with the help of a new promotion on pineapples, which were 50p cheaper than last week. Its stuffed green olives were also down 17p, contributing to a basket that was 1.1% cheaper than last week's. The retailer made two price hikes, putting iceberg lettuce up 9p and Percol coffee up 7p.

Tesco dropped two places and made the largest number of price increases. Its iceberg lettuce was up 9p, the cranberry juice 15p, tinned spaghetti 8p, and kidney beans 7p, although its pineapple was down 78p due to a promotion starting.

It was business as usual for Waitrose, which again provided the most expensive basket. But the gap was much narrower between its basket and those of the cheapest retailers this week at £5.62 compared with last week's £22.06.

Its Dairylea was down 5p and Quorn Chicken Style Pieces down 1p, but its iceberg lettuce was up 9p and bananas up 4p.
