Puzzled pig bosses are investigating a bizarre conflict between figures from the same source measuring exports and imports of Danish bacon.

Figures from trade data agency GTIS indicate that exports of bacon from Denmark destined for the UK rose 41% year-on-year in 2005. But statistics for imports of Danish bacon into the UK, also from GTIS, show a 5% dip over the same period.

Chris Lamb of the British Pig Executive said: "The figures are calculated using the same methodology, by taking a sample of exporters and importers and aggregating them up, so they will never be exactly the same, but they shouldn't be this different."
