Ethical bottled water brand Life Water has unveiled a can format in an effort to encourage Brits to reduce their use of plastic.
Made with 70% recycled aluminum, the can contains no bisphenol A (BPA), an industrial chemical used to make plastics and resins, making it “the UK’s only zero-plastic, BPA-free, spring water solution” according to Life Water. “Most other drinks producers use a BPA resin to line their cans. The lining in our cans is a water-based epoxy, which is more expensive but does not contain BPA.”
Life Water’s new, 100% recyclable format will be available to grocery from 1 May, when it will also go on sale later the same month at the Natural History Museum, as part of the London venue’s commitment to axe single-use plastic water bottles.
The can is the result of eight months’ development, with input from Greenpeace’s oceans team. Life Water said the environmental organisation was keen for soft drinks suppliers “to use more cans and less bottles because of the recycling efficiency of aluminium compared to plastic and the fact that cans don’t degrade in oceans in waterways”.
