Booths is phasing out plastic fresh produce bags and replacing them with starch-based compostable alternatives as part of its ongoing sustainability drive.
The upmarket retailer expects the compostable bags to be introduced in all 28 stores by August, or as soon as current stock runs out. It is also looking into selling reusable net bags, and is currently liaising with suppliers to confirm a launch date.

It comes after the supermarket announced it was phasing out 5p plastic carrier bags, and will be encouraging customers to bring their own bags or purchase one of its reusable alternatives made from 90% recycled plastic. In a statement posted on Twitter from its @BoothsCountry account, the retailer said: ‘Once our current stocks are gone, they’re gone. You can bring your own, or purchase from our range of reusable options in store.’
Booths’ sustainability drive also saw it announce it is scrapping complimentary hot drinks in its cafés for loyalty scheme members and a pledge to remove disposable takeaway cups from 2 July.
“Responsible business practices are integral to Booths, and we’re constantly striving to be a more sustainable and environmentally friendly retailer,” said a Booths spokeswoman. “This move is part of our commitment to being a more sustainable retailer and reduce the amount of plastic we use as a business.”
