The list of good cover versions of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody is not a long one. The excruciating attempts of the likes of G4 and William Shatner won’t live long in the memory (not in a positive way, anyway).
This hasn’t put off Waitrose, which has thrown everything at its school concert-set version. Parents look on agog as a cast of kids perform an ambitiously staged (if slightly bowdlerised) rendition. It pays tribute to the Queen video, but soon shifts the action to space, where astronauts and Martians sing in charmingly wonky costumes, with the odd perplexingly impressive special effect thrown in.
The ad’s scale - Christmas has surely come early in terms of spend - underlines how serious Waitrose is about its rebrand, while the teamwork message works nicely. Look on and weep, Shatner.
