Champion: John West - Smart Strip
Several years of research lie behind this sustainable ‘smart strip’ from John West. The UK canned fish market has made moves in the right direction on its packaging for multipack towers, switching from plastic PET shrink wrap to hold cans together to cardboard cartons.
However, though recyclable, cardboard weighs significantly more, reducing its environmental benefits. And so, the team at John West spent three-and-a-half years developing their innovative alternative: a ‘naked’ multipack held together by a recyclable aluminium ‘smart strip’ sticker.
Still strong enough to hold up to five cans together securely but far lighter than cardboard, their solution is a “delightful and innovative approach” to the format, which delivers “great consumer interaction and feeling on twist” while also successfully reducing the carbon footprint.
