Josh Holmes, senior consultant at Retail Economics, said “prices of everyday items continued to rise strongly in the first week of the year, bringing renewed pressure to consumers”.
“The fact that key value items and own-label products including vegetables, nappies and petfood are seeing the strongest inflation rates poses a real challenge for shoppers, as these are household staples that are difficult to trade down or cut back on.”
