Secret trials of a revamped self-scanning system and new customer service card have begun at Safeway stores in Maldon and Bath. The new system is an upgrade of Shop & Go, which is in 180 of its stores. Next week the trial rolls out to Reigate  one of eight stores testing the system. A source at Reigate said: "ABC cards are still being used for Shop & Go in its current format, but the new system will filter them out and replace them with a new card. "This card will offer Shop & Go customers themed deals as well as rewards for introducing new customers." Unlike the old scanners which print out a receipt, the new scanner can communicate directly with the till. But there were problems at Maldon and Bath this week. Both stores reported the system had crashed and would not be back up that day. - Sainsbury plans to introduce its Fast Track handheld scanner equivalent to Shop & Go to bigger stores across the country in the medium term. {{NEWS }}
