Emily Wong
Founder, Emily Crisps, on Dutch courage, walruses and Emily Blunt
What was your first job? I started working on my parent’s flea market stall when I was six.
What’s been your worst job interview? I thought the best way to overcome my nerves for a phone interview was with a little Dutch courage, but I came across as what the feedback notes called ‘a combination of a sailor and a protestor’.
What was the first music single you bought? Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’.
How do you describe your job to your mates? I’m required to be a driving force, challenging the industry for the better.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? It’s the amazing team I work with and the people I meet through the start-up community.
What is the least rewarding part? Sometimes it would be nice to have a living room that’s not so stacked with stock!
What is your motto in life? Have no regrets.
If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? A daily fruit drop of fresh Alphonso mangoes.
If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? It would be great to see supermarkets doing more to educate and inspire people around fruit & veg.
What luxury would you have on a desert island? I hate to go hungry so I would definitely take a coconut hammer.
What animal most reflects your personality? Working all hours means that when I take a break I really want to relax. Every time I see pictures of walruses on the beach I have a definite affinity with them.
What’s your favourite film and why? I love films that celebrate food. One of the best is Eat Drink Man Woman. The opening scene reminds me of my childhood growing up in the kitchen with my gran.
What has been the most embarrassing moment in your life? I consider myself well travelled so when a friend wanted to visit Barcelona I told him I’d handle everything. I ended up booking flights to Madrid and only realised it when we were landing. I had a lot of explaining to do.
Which celebrity would you most like to work with and why? Emily Blunt, because there might just be that photo op but also because she’s incredibly talented and I think she’d be a hell of a lot of fun to work with.
