What was your first job? I went straight from high school into a TV and radio engineering apprenticeship. Unfortunately, my employer spent four days a week working and another two chasing unpaid accounts. Inevitably, he went out of business.

What’s been your worst-ever job interview? Quite a number of years ago I went for an interview for a job as a brewer with another whisky company. The interviewer was the company production director and not only was he an hour late arriving, but as the interview progressed and his speech became more incoherent, it was apparent that he was very fond of his own product!

What was the first music single you bought? Probably one by the Rolling Stones.

How do you describe your job to your mates? One of the best jobs imaginable. I love working for a smaller company as this gives a much greater opportunity to have your ideas put into practice.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Creating all those fantastic Arran whiskies, and also meeting whisky enthusiasts who come from all over the world to visit our distillery.

What is the least rewarding part? I commute between two islands, so it has to be sitting on ferries for a couple of hours each week.

What is your motto in life? Live for today as nobody knows what tomorrow will bring.

If you were allowed one dream perk what would it be? To visit a bourbon distillery in Kentucky.

What’s your favourite movie and why? Any of the Indiana Jones movies as they combine a decent story with humour.

What’s been the most embarrassing moment of your life? I hate to say this but probably my wedding speech.

Do you have any phobias? I really hate rats!

If you could change one thing in grocery what would it be? I’d like more exposure for Scotch whisky and, in particular, single malts.

What luxury would you have on your desert island? A good supply of books, both fiction and historical.

What animal best reflects your personality and why? I’d have to say my two West Highland Terriers as they are loyal and friendly, but have a bit of a stubborn streak.
