Sophie Birrell
Marketing manager, Lily’s Kitchen, on Rick Wakeman, her barking colleagues and bouncy train journeys
What was your first ever job? I worked as a receptionist in my local hotel. I really loved it and learnt loads. Rick Wakeman stayed once, which was exciting. At the time.
What’s been your worst job interview? I turned up to an assessment centre late and had to walk in and collect my lonely name badge from the table at the back of the room. The facilitator just said: “You must be Sophie, take a seat.” I wanted the world to swallow me up. I’m glad it didn’t - I got the job!
What was the first music single you bought? MC Hammer’s ‘U Can’t Touch This’ on tape.
How do you describe your job to your mates? The best job ever. I get to have pictures of cats on my screen. Some of my colleagues bark. And I report into an inspirational leader who founded one of the most nimble, successful growing companies I know.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Knowing that I market something I love, believe in and feed to my own furry family members.
What is the least rewarding part? The frustration of massive demand and not enough availability to get our food to the people who want it.
What is your motto? If you’re not breaking your bones, you’re clearly not trying hard enough.
If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? To ride my horse to work.
If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? More space on shelf for Lily’s Kitchen.
What luxury would you have on a desert island? SPF 50. I frazzle in the sun.
What animal most reflects your personality? A squirrel. It’s been my nickname for years and I like to think I’m bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
What’s your favourite film and why? Airplane! I know all the words and it always makes me laugh.
What was the most embarrassing moment in your life? Recently, I got bounced out of my seat on a bumpy train journey and landed in a fellow commuter’s lap.
Which celebrity would you most like to work with and why? Robbie Williams. He has eight dogs and visited our pop-up Christmas Grotto for dogs last year. He has a great attitude towards feeding the very best to his pets.
