National account manager, Mrs Crimble’s, on being ‘too polished’, chocolate macaroons and his dream Aston Martin

What was your first ever job? An apprenticeship at a power tools company.

What’s been your worst job interview? I made it through to the final stage, me and one other candidate. I carried out research, displayed my findings in graphs and tables, did a big PowerPoint presentation, rehearsed in front of my wife. D-day came and I nailed it! Feedback: “We think you are too polished for us.”

What was the first music single you bought? ‘Smooth Criminal’ by Michael Jackson.

How do you describe your job to your mates? I just tell them I sell yummy cakes. That gets everyone’s attention.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? The moment you get that first order in from a new customer still sends tingles right through me.

What is the least rewarding part? It’s probably getting on the scales on a Saturday morning after another week of eating too many Mrs Crimble’s Choc Macaroons.

If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? It would have to be an Aston Martin DBS as a company car.

Do you have any phobias? Snakes terrify me!

If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? I would love to see more emphasis and space for the free-from fixtures. They really need more theatre.

What luxury would you have on a desert island? Sun, sea and a bucket of ice cold beer. Heaven!

What animal most reflects your personality? A monkey. They think about things and can be quite strategic but they also have a naughty and mischievous side.

What’s your favourite film and why? I love the Bourne films - great action and writing.

What was the most embarrassing moment in your life? I once worked at a local bar and had an induction course the morning after working a late shift. I fell asleep during the health and safety video. I thought I’d got away with it until I realised everyone was looking at me and my tutor asked me how I’d been sleeping lately.

Which celebrity would you most like to work with and why? I’d like to cook in a kitchen with Jamie Oliver and have Paddy McGuiness as our front of house. Creating great food and having a real laugh in the process - that would be good!
