The European Court of Justice may put a stop to Parma ham being sliced at supermarket deli counters in a landmark case involving Asda. Asda, which sells deli Parma at 160 stores, is accused of breaking an Italian law which says that Parma ham should be sliced and packed in Parma. It is being tried in conjunction with a French company Ravil, which is breaking the law by grating its Grana Padano cheese outside the Italian Po Valley. Asda chilled food director Penny Coates said: "We'll be asking the court to apply common sense." Asda won a series of cases in UK courts brought by a consortium of Italian Parma ham producers in the late 1990s. The European court verdict is expected in August. {{NEWS }}
