Asda has scooped this week's Top Store award yet again for providing a full basket and excellent customer service.

The 44,000 sq ft Washington store in Tyne and Wear provided our shopper with everything on his list. The store was clean and tidy and he said it was well-merchandised. It was also well signposted, which enabled him to find items on his list easily.

There were no queues for the checkouts and staff took him straight to the item he asked for. The checkout assistant greeted our shopper and offered to pack his bags for him. The receipt was error-free but he was not impressed that packing trolleys were blocking his path in some of the aisles.

Data from CACI suggests that Asda is the most-suited store to the local demographic, with Morrisons and Somerfield following closely behind.

Team leader Gary Graham has worked at Asda for 21 years and at the Washington store for 10 months.

He said at the end of 2006, Asda had invested £1.5m in updating its George and home and living sections and that a further £1.5m would be ploughed into the store in September.

"We're updating our chillers and fridges," he said. "It's quite a revamp and should iron out some of the challenges we face because the store is old. It's important that the store is looking fresh and spritely."
