Organic home delivery service Abel & Cole is tackling food waste with a new own-label passata that uses up over-ripe tomatoes.
Debuting this week, the brand’s Organic Cherry Tomato Passata (rsp: £2.25/330g) comes in a little beer bottle and is made from cherry tomatoes that would be past their best for salad.
The idea for the product came during a visit to a supplier in Sicily, said Abel & Cole buying director David Balmer.
“We saw some out-of-spec tomatoes sitting beside the punnet line. They were a bit over-ripe but perfectly fit to eat. We thought what a great idea it would be to make passata with them,” he added. “It’s a beautifully artisan foodie product, which helps our grower get the most from his crop and reduce potential waste.”
