ABP Food Group has struck a strategic partnership with animal genetics company Genus to improve beef genetics and meat quality.
Genus will develop a “proprietary custom index” for beef bulls, which the company said would result in “superior genetics” coming into the ABP supply chain. “This will create a more sustainable beef supply chain generating value through improved feed to weight gain efficiencies, carcase values and better quality product for the consumer,” it added.
ABP CEO Paul Finnerty said the partnership marked an important development for ABP and the beef sector. “Major strides in genetic improvement have been made in pork, poultry and dairy in recent decades, but beef has lagged behind. Now is the time for this to change. Collaborating with Genus we see the potential for producing even better quality beef from a more sustainable and efficient supply chain, thereby underpinning the competiveness of our business.”
Genus CEO Karim Bitar said his company’s proprietary genomics technology would allow it to bring genomics achievements from dairy and pork into the beef supply chain. “We believe that by entering into strategic partnerships with integrated beef producers, together we will be able to deliver significant value enhancement across the supply chain.”
In The Grocer’s recent Meat 2050 special, industry experts highlighted genomics as a key focus for the meat supply chain – especially for beef – over the coming decades.
