ABP Food Group has acquired a second production site in Poland, taking over a facility previously owned by Italy’s Ferrarini in the town of Klosowice in western Poland.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, but it is understood the Irish beef giant paid in the region of €5m-€10m for the site.
The deal, which was announced just before Christmas, will take ABP’s production capacity in Poland to about 100,000 cattle a year. It currently stands at around 60,000 a year.
Ferrarini used the site for pork production, but ABP will now retool it for beef processing. It expects to start production in February.
CEO Paul Finnerty said acquiring a second site in Poland would allow ABP to “further solidify our position as a sustainable supplier of high-quality Polish beef products to customers throughout Europe”.
He added: “When we entered the Polish market, we intended to build a business of significant scale, and this acquisition is a continuation of that strategy.”
ABP first entered Poland in 2011, when it bought a plant in Pniewy, about 30km from Klosowice. It currently employs about 130 staff at Pniewy, and ultimately expects to employ a total of 250 staff once production at Klosowice starts.
