Poultry supplier Adlington hopes to increase turnover by at least 20% to over £3m on the back of product launches and a move into the multiple retail sector.

The Warwickshire cooked meat producer will launch a low-fat turkey bacon line and an additive-free cooked and smoked turkey, chicken and duck breast range. The company, which currently supplies fine food retailers, delis and London food halls, will target high-end multiples such as Waitrose and M&S.

The lightly minced, herb-flavoured turkey thigh bacon will be sold in 125g and 250g vacuum top-sealed trays (rsp: £1.39 and £1.95 respectively). Flavours including a smoked variant are in development, with the product free of all e-numbers except nitrite salt.

"Eliminating e-numbers has produced plenty of problems for us during development," said MD Rod Adlington. "In fact it has been a real battle to get where we are now, but the result is an incredibly low-fat and healthy product."

The line will launch in early June in stores that already stock the range. Marketing may include TV.

Adlington has also begun selling a British, barn reared, additive-free premium smoked turkey, priced at £18.50/kg to £19/kg.

"Two major companies are expressing an interest in working with us in R&D on their own turkey and poultry products for the supermarket sector," he said.

He also stressed that a move into the multiples would not mean sacrificing profitability. "It is too easy to rush into growth on low margins through virtually buying turnover. We will retain margins at about 35% at all costs. You have to do that to be able to invest."
