Aldi has bolstered its Welsh lamb offering with the launch of five new SKUs in stores across North Wales.
The PGI Welsh lamb products, which include steaks, chops, leg, breast and shoulder joints have been sourced exclusively from Red Tractor-assured farms across the nation.
It means the discounter now offers an extensive year-round range of local lamb in all 38 of its Welsh stores, and comes on the back of a similar commitment in South Wales last year.
Aldi has also committed to only replace Welsh lamb with products from other parts of the UK if there is insufficient supply from Welsh farms. The retailer does not source any of its fresh lamb products sourced from overseas.
“Since it was introduced last year, our fresh lamb range has proved extremely popular with customers across South Wales,” said Aldi joint MD of buying Tony Baines.
“We’re very pleased to now extend the range to customers in other parts of the country,” he added. “Each product is sourced exclusively from Wales and is clearly labelled to let customers know they are supporting a Welsh farmer when they buy the product.”
Extending its Welsh lamb range was a “vote of confidence” for the sector, and “a response to consumers’ wish to enjoy Welsh lamb all year round”, said Rhys Llywelyn, marketing manager for Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales.
Aldi is also gearing up to open its new £60m Cardiff distribution centre next month. Measuring 46,000m2, the facility will serve the retailer’s growing number of stores across Wales and the South West of England and will create 400 jobs.
