Aldi is set to donate over 250,000 meals to charities supporting children facing hunger over the Easter school holidays.
The discounter will be donating surplus food from stores to local causes through the community giving platform Neighbourly.
It’s part of Aldi’s commitment to donate 10 million meals through Neighbourly in 2021, and its support for footballer Marcus Rashford’s campaign to tackle child food poverty. The discounter has already donated a claimed two million meals this year.
Aldi said today it expected to donate around 149 tonnes of food over the Easter school holidays, to causes prioritising children facing hunger.
“We’re proud to support good causes across the country, helping them to provide meals to those in need over the Easter period,” said Mary Dunn, Aldi UK MD of corporate responsibility.
“At a time when more people are experiencing financial hardship and food insecurity due to Covid-19, we are committed to doing what we can to donate more meals in 2021 than ever before.”
Neighbourly CEO Steve Butterworth said: “The school holidays are often a busy time for the nation’s charities and food banks. I’m sure Aldi’s donations will be a massive help for so many of these vital organisations.”
Aldi is a founding member of Rashford’s Child Food Poverty Taskforce, which last year successfully lobbied the government to raise the value of Healthy Start vouchers for low-income families from this April.
