Auchentoshan has unveiled an Amazon-exclusive single malt finished in sauvignon blanc casks.
The Edrington Beam Suntory brand’s latest whisky (47% abv) will roll exclusively into the online retail giant from 15 November. It is matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred into the sauvignon blanc barrique casks (rsp: £50/70cl).
It was a “zesty” dram with notes of “green grapes, light acacia honey and lemon curd, vanilla sweetness, lychees, honeydew melon, dried grass and hay”, said the brand, with a “hot and peppery” finish and “lingering notes of custard apple with a salty mouthfeel”.
The NPD comes on the back of a change to the law this summer which enabled scotch whisky producers to use a wider variety of casks for maturation – although casks used “must still result in a spirit which has the taste, arome and colour generally found in scotch whisky”, according to the Scotch Whisky Association.
Beam Suntory senior scotch whisky director Eileen Livingston called the launch “a unique innovation that disrupts the category and provides consumers with a drinking experience out of the norm”.
“This enables us to connect with urban millennials who are looking to sample new expressions and shared experiences.”
It’s the latest in a series of tie-ups between Amazon and Edrington Beam Suntory: Amazon previously secured two unique whiskies from major distilleries Bowmore and Highland Park – the first time big names in posh whisky had bottled exclusively for Amazon.
Last month the e-commerce giant entered the own-label spirit world with the launch of Tovess Gin, described as a “premium dry gin crafted to the highest quality standards in a single batch distillation and infused with individually distilled lime and grapefruit peels, yielding a smooth Mediterranean taste”.
Tovess is being distilled for Amazon by industrial spirits producer Alcohols at its West Midlands base, where it owns four hundred-year-old copper pot stills.
