One of France's largest and best known grower exporters Pomanjou has launched a new dessert apple called Honey Crunch to coincide with its 40th anniversary.
The green red apple which turns yellow is a cross between Honey Gold and Macoun.
It was discovered by Minnesota University and selected in 1974.
Fruit is average to large within the 75mm to 90mm range and in European terms fits in well with harvesting cycles as it can be picked several times following Gala. Storage life lasts until June.
Following the industry trend to protect its investment in market share of new varieties, it has acquired an exclusive planting and marketing licence from the US breeders.
It is also using the name as a brand on two new consumer packs designed to attract the snack market as well as labelling apples individually. Fruit will also be marketed in traditional single layer trays.
Volumes are estimated to be only 500 tonnes this season. Pomanjou currently supplies 25,000 tonnes of apples to UK supermarkets.
