Asda has axed 13 regional manager roles in a further streamlining of its leadership structure.
The supermarket said the move would see four regional supermarket management roles and nine roles in Express stores removed.
Asda sent a memo to staff last week confirming that the move would mean its store estate would be managed by 22 rather than 30 sub-regions.
The memo read: “Change is never easy and unfortunately we have had to say goodbye to a number of colleagues.”
It follows a tough Christmas for Asda on the back of its rollercoaster 2024, with sales over the festive period down 5.8% in the 12 weeks to 29 December.
Asda’s market share was down to 12.5% in December, compared with 13.5% the previous year, according to the latest Kantar figures.
The move follows nearly 500 head office roles being slashed by Asda in November, which later that month brought in its former CEO Allan Leighton to replace Stuart Rose, as it looks to turn around the struggling business.
Asda pointed out that the changes to management began prior to Leighton joining the business and would result in “bigger, more meaningful” roles for managers.
“We made changes to our field-based retail team regions to reflect the scale of our business across large stores and convenience,” said an Asda spokesman. “These changes set us up to serve our customers in the best way for 2025 as we deliver Asda Price and other exciting propositions.”
