Asda has said it wants its customers to ditch plastic and switch to refillable water bottles to use on the go, after announcing a new partnership with marine pollution group City to Sea.
As part of the plans it will encourage shoppers to refill bottles at water fountains in its stores.
It’s also backing an app that enables customers to get information about where the nearest refill site is.
City to Sea is a non-profit environmental organisation dedicated to preventing marine plastic pollution at source. It has more than 20,000 water stations listed on its Refill app.
Where stores do not have water fountains, Asda said it had introduced a new process to enable its café staff to refill customers’ water bottles, without compromising health and safety standards.
“We know our customers are concerned about plastic pollution and are trying to reduce the amount of plastic they use each day,” an Asda spokeswoman said.
“One of the ways they’re doing this is by using reusable water bottles instead of buying bottled water.”
“And we’ve seen an increase in demand for reusable water bottles as customers are now becoming more conscious about single-use plastic.
“That’s why we were delighted to partner with City to Sea to make it easier for people to find places to refill their water bottles for free - including our own Asda cafés.”
