Asda is replacing about two million black plastic trays with new cardboard trays for its Extra Special Aberdeen Angus steak range.
The move is part of Asda’s commitment to “use less and recycle more”.
The retailer said the initiative would save more than 50 tonnes of plastic a year.
The price of Asda Extra Special Aberdeen Angus sirloin steak (227g), its Extra Special Aberdeen Angus rump steak (255g) and Extra Special Aberdeen Angus ribeye steak (227g) would stay the same, it said.
Asda has already removed 6,500 tonnes of packaging from own brand products in the past 18 months, including on baby wipes, greetings cards, bedding, pizza trays and swedes.
It has also committed to making all its own brand packaging fully recyclable by 2025 in a bid to reduce, re-use and recycle more plastic from across the business.
Gavin Thompson, Asda’s steak buyer, said the change in steak packaging marked the next step in the group’s commitment to use less and recycle more. He said it was “very passionate” about making all its own-brand packaging 100% recyclable by 2025.
“There is still a lot of confusion around packaging and what can or cannot be recycled,” said Thompson.
“The move to cardboard trays means customers don’t have to prioritise plastic reduction over grocery decision making, ensuring they can continue purchasing quality steak at the same price, but with the added value of recycle-ready packaging.”
