Asda is stocking a record 8.1 million roses - enough to stretch from London to Finland and back again - ahead of Valentine’s Day.
The decision to increase supplies by 5% on last year was partly due to the fact that Lent begins on the same day, which could swell sales as shoppers swap booze and sweets for flowers, the retailer said. Bouquets in pink, cerise, yellow, orange, white and purple, alongside the traditional red, are also being sold.
Prices for a single rose start from £2, rising to £30 for an Extra Special bouquet, comprising 30 stems.
“Last Valentine’s Day, we sold just over 7.5 million roses, with that number expected to increase this year,” said Asda rose expert Sarah Oliver,
“With roses being an essential for Valentine’s Day, we want to make sure only the highest-quality, most vibrant blooms are being gifted to loved ones.”
