A potential five-day strike among workers at 20 of Asda's distribution centres has been called off.
Last week, members of the GMB union at 20 Asda distribution centres across the UK voted for a five-day strike in a long-running dispute over working conditions and union recognition. The strike was due to run from 00.01am today until 23.59pm on 4 July.
However, last minute talks between Asda and the GMB resulted in an agreement being struck, setting out a number of proposals, including forming a national joint council for distribution staff.
David Cheesewright, chief operation officer for Asda, said: “We're pleased to have signed an agreement acceptable to both sides to end the current dispute.”
Paul Kenny, GMB general secretary, said: “This new agreement heralds a fresh approach to representation and bargaining. It is a clear intention that issues beneficial to the growth of the company and the economic benefit of its employees will be dealt with through the national joint council.”
