Asda has been hammering its main supermarket rivals on price in the past months. But an outstanding performance at its Livingston store gave it a first service and availability win since early December. The busy but “pleasant” store won by just one point as our shopper found staff “without exception eager to help” across all departments.
Like Asda, Waitrose Haywards Heath had one out-of-stock item, but the “uniformly high standards across the store” and “impressive level of knowledge” displayed by the staff saw it notch up a strong score.
A “dirty” freezer unit with “an unpleasant smell” that our shopper had to put up with as she searched for the ice cream put paid to Sainsbury’s in Matlock’s hopes of victory. Otherwise, the store standards were generally high and most of our shopper interactions with staff were positive - except for one shelf-stacker whom she felt could have done more.
Our shopper felt Tesco’s Crewe store was “a little scruffy-looking” and that it could be due for a refurbishment. Her trolley wheel getting stuck in stray sprouts strewn on the floor also resulted in low marks for store standards, while she had to speak to staff on several occasions due to two out-of-stock and four not-stocked items.
At Morrisons in Ealing, our shopper had trouble locating some of the fresh items as there were a number of unpacked boxes blocking the aisle, but it was disappointing service from the “majority of the staff” who “provided a half-hearted attempt to help me to find products” that resulted in a particularly low score of 48.
