Scottish wholesaler JW Filshill has struck a deal with Asda to supply 61 stores with craft beer from Scottish microbreweries.
The wholesaler’s specialist beer and ales division, The Craft Beer Clan of Scotland, has secured the £850k contract, which will see 25 new lines from Scottish brewers hit shelves in Asdas north of the border.
Asda is working with the 13 brewers to expand its now 75-line strong Scottish beer portfolio in a move that it says makes it the largest single retailer of craft and beer ales in Scotland.
Brewers include Isle of Arran, Deeside, Eden Mill, Jaw Brew, WooHa Brewing Company and West Brewing.
“It’s fantastic we’ve been able to work with a major retailer such as Asda,” said Craft Beer Clan export director Chris Miller. “The craft brewing sector is renowned for its collaborations, so to be able to bring so many new brand listings across Scotland has been a great opportunity as we continue to build on Scotland’s reputation as a world-class producer of drink.”
The final selection ensures a geographical spread across all Scottish regions; for over half of the brewers, the Asda deal will be their first major supermarket listing.
“Although we’re currently one of the youngest microbreweries in Scotland, having just celebrated our first anniversary, this new deal is a great example of the supermarket’s commitment to supporting Scottish suppliers no matter how big or small,” said owner of WooHa Brewing Company Heather McDonald.
“Scottish provenance and taste are important, but what makes our lager and ales stand out is that we put a modern twist on traditional brewing by using scientific knowledge of microbiology to create modern hop strains, alongside state-of-the-art equipment.”
