Fifty diners will win the chance to eat at the Shoreditch pop-up restaurant and dine on Asda meat

Asda has announced plans to open “the cheapest steak restaurant” in London on 9 June.

The restaurant is called Steak Bay – in a cheeky nod to Salt Bae, the founder of one of London’s most expensive restaurants Nusrat – and will open for one night only to showcase the quality of the supermarket’s meat products.

Fifty diners will win the chance to eat at the Shoreditch pop-up restaurant and choose between 21-day matured tomahawk and extra thick cut 30-day matured sirloin steaks, Ultimate British beef steak burgers, slow-cooked pork rib racks and more, the retailer said.

Asda claims to have invested millions into meat, fish and poultry quality in recent months, introducing premium cuts such as the tomahawk, and increasing the thickness and maturity of all Extra Special core steak lines to 30 days, with prices starting at £5.

This summer the retailer has also launched a new Ultimate Extra Special range, created using high quality meats and designed to be large enough to cater for the whole family.

“We’re proud of the changes we’ve made to our meat ranges this summer and are confident the products deliver the quality and taste our customers expect,” said Gavin Warburton, Asda senior director of meat, fish and poultry.

“Our new Ultimate Extra Special range introduces large, premium cuts of meat such as the showstopper tomahawk steak which are often seen in restaurants rather than supermarket shelves but are the ideal size to cater for the whole family.”

Unlike Nusrat’s gold leaf topped dishes, meals at the Asda pop-up will be rested in tinfoil before seasoned with salt at the table in homage to Salt Bae.

“We can’t wait to open the doors to the Steak Bay restaurant to showcase these products in all of their glory, proving that you don’t need to spend hundreds or thousands of pounds to access amazing quality dishes,” Warburton added.

Attendees will be selected at random via an online registration form at Asda.com/steakbay.
