Asda Chelmsford, Essex
2 out of stock - With aisle ends piled high with special offers and stocking trolleys parked in the vegetable section, the store had a cluttered feel to it. Checkout queues were long, while a significant amount of stock in the fresh produce section had a noticeably short shelf life. Staff were friendly and enthusiastic and the store was extremely well merchandised. However, both the tomato ketchup and tomato purée were unavailable in the desired size.
We visited on 11 July at 11.41am. Our shop lasted 50 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was 12 minutes.
Morrisons Holyhead Road, Coventry
0 out of stock - Our top store of the week provided a full basket of goods with money-off promotions on both the grapes and cider. The store was clean and well presented and the shelves clearly signposted and well stocked. A member of staff pointed our shopper in the direction of the pâté on request and help was offered to pack the goods at the checkout. Despite the store being very busy, it was easy to navigate and delivered a stress-free shop.

Sainsbury’s Bath
1 out of stock - This large out-of-town Sainsbury’s was well stocked with a wide variety of choice, particularly in fresh produce. Our shopper was greeted politely at the checkout and offered help to pack. Aisles were clear and easy to navigate although the layout was somewhat confusing. The only item missing from the list was the Quorn chicken pieces, which were out of stock. The lean beef steak was on offer at two for £4.50 as was the pack of bread rolls at three for £1.

Tesco Coatbridge, Lanarkshire
0 out of stock - Our shopper could find no fault with the 90,000 sq ft Tesco Extra store in Lanarkshire, praising everything from the helpful staff and easy navigation to the strong merchandising and abundant promotions. Bags for life were offered readily at the checkout by a polite, efficient assistant. The store provided a full shopping basket with notable offers on the Weetabix – two for £2 – and the Soreen Fruited Malt Loaf at half price.

Waitrose Hailsham, East Sussex
2 out of stock - There was a real sense of order and calm at the Waitrose store in Hailsham despite floorspace being restricted to just 16,000 sq ft. Fresh produce and organic sections were comprehensively stocked but elsewhere, most notably in the ambient section, there were several gaps on shelves. The store boasted a plethora of three-for-two and 20%-off offers but both the sausages and Cheestrings were out of stock at the time of our visit.
