A plastic device that indicates when a turkey is fully cooked has been launched in the UK in a bid to reduce food poisoning over the festive period.
Sainsbury is selling the Pop-Up Timer bundled with fresh turkeys this Christmas, while 140 larger stores across The Co-operative Group’s estate are selling two-packs for 99p. Tesco is also planning to list the disposable thermometer.
The Pop-Up Timer is inserted into the breast
meat prior to cooking. When the temperature of the meat reaches 85C, a red stick is released to show the bird has been fully cooked and harmful bacteria destroyed.
Importer Viva International Products has secured European distribution rights for the thermometer, which is made in the US. Boss Gareth Davies said: “It can also be used in chicken and other meats and we will be staging a big push for it after Christmas.”
