Asda has recalled jars of pickled beetroot over fears they may contain the bug that can cause botulism food poisoning.
It has recalled a single batch (code 4340) of its 710g Chosen By You Pickled Crinkle Cut Beetroot. The jars carry best-before date 6 December 2016 and barcode number 505407035908.
The recall was issued by the retailer after it learned manufacturing controls to prevent the “growth and toxin production of Clostridium botulinum” could not be satisfactorily demonstrated, said the Food Standards Agency. Clostridium botulinum can cause the rare but potentially deadly food poisoning botulism.
Asda has urged shoppers not to consume the product but return it to their nearest store for a full refund.
“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused and will ensure this doesn’t happen again,” the retailer said in a notice to shoppers.
It is the latest in a string of unrelated recalls this week, including 13 sushi lines sold at Boots, and a batch of two types of Bisto gravy granules.
