Brakes has introduced new welfare standards for its own-brand fresh chicken products.
Chickens sourced for the range will now have 20% more space to move around and perch, as well as “more access to enrichments” including straw bales, items to peck, and more natural light.
The new standards will allow stocking density to be reduced from the industry standard 38kg per metre to 30kg per metre.
The wholesaler claims it is the first major wholesaler to introduce enhanced welfare standard for its poultry.
Brakes sells over 40 own-brand lines of fresh chicken, all of which are produced in the UK under the Red Tractor scheme.
The scheme highlights traceability of produce in the supply chain, all the way to the British farm of origin.
To help ensure the standards, Brakes has partnered with suppliers to introduce an internal camera monitoring system on broiler chicken farms.
“We are delighted to announce the completion of our move to enhanced welfare chicken,” said Paul Nieduszynski, CEO at Brakes’ parent company Sysco GB.
“The improvements we’ve introduced are a significant step forward, helping to set a new benchmark for bird welfare in our sector.
“We know that our customers and consumers care deeply about animal welfare, so we are pleased to be leading the wholesale sector in this area.”
