Brakes has launched an LGBTQ+ support network across all its sites as Pride month gets underway in the UK.
The new support network will consist of several ‘support champions’ who will assist employees with issues relating to the LGBTQ+ community.
The initiative has been created via the company’s Spectrum programme, which was started in 2019 to support LGBTQ+ employees at work.
Brakes employees will be able to use the network simply to have a conversation relating to their identity, or to access appropriate information or help.
As part of a wider initiative, Brakes will also offer on-demand training to staff to help line managers better understand the needs of LGBTQ+ colleagues.
Throughout June, every site will also have a support stand offering advice to colleagues and helping to answer any questions they might have.
Brakes also said it would change its social media logos to incorporate the rainbow flag for the entire year.
“Having a diverse and engaged workforce is incredibly important to our business and we recognise how important it is to show support not just in June, but across the entire year,” said Sysco GB HR director Margaret Gooch.
“We are very pleased to be launching new initiatives, including training and development opportunities that will make a lasting contribution to how diversity is viewed within Brakes.”
Chair of Spectrum at Brakes Alvin Engutsamy said: “We are very proud of the work our Spectrum team does in raising awareness of LGBTQ+ issues at Brakes. Our Pride programme will ensure that, across the business, our colleagues can access the support and information they need.
“We hope the work we do will inspire companies across the sector to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community.”
